Twas the Night Before Christmas Parodies

Twas Minutes before Halftime
by Ryan Stover

'Twas the minutes before halftime, and all through the court,
The fans were cheering on the basketball sport
With rebounds and layups and three point shots,
The athletes became prideful, and felt quite hot

Then all of a sudden it was my time to shine,
If I had a moment of glory, this would be mine,
With the ball in my hands, I charged towards the basket,
While the fans went wild, and caused quite a racket

I put the ball up, it fell through the net
Then I trotted away like I was "all that"
I stood with a smirk all across my face
Feeling like I was the one and only ace

I looked at the fans and smiled and waved
I figured I was experiencing my five minutes of fame
I felt like a champion, I felt like a star
I felt like I never had felt before

From the sidelines they screamed "Wrong basket! Wrong basket!"
I looked at the scoreboard and laid in my casket
It was the other teams point, I scored it for them
I couldn't believe how stupid I had been

Twas’ the Week before Finals
Amelia Gutierrez

Twas the week before finals, when all were oppressed
Every student and teacher was acting possessed
The deadlines were close and the standards set high
And everyone felt sure they were going to die.

The students were tormented, and all sleep deprived
With hair all amiss and massive bags under eyes
Memorizing, cramming, and all in a trance
Learning silly things like the cities of France.

They wished their teacher’s advice they never forsook
And spent more time studying, and less on facebook
If they had been ready when pandemonium broke loose
Maybe they wouldn’t be hopeless, tying their own noose.

Their teachers nagged and pleaded all semester long
Bur the students had grown tired of their never-ending song
And now come the final hours, the judgment days

And the price for procrastination, they all must pay!

Thesaurus Poetry

The Thesaurus Poem is a bit more difficult to explain, but here's the formula I used to teach it:
Formula:
1. Select a word (emotions work well)
2. List synonyms or antonyms given in the thesaurus.
3. Using these words create a poem around the concept or theme suggested by your collection
4. You must use at least three of the synonyms and your poem must have a controlling idea or image which is maintained throughout the poem.

Example:

Listen
You're not listening to me
You smile and look past me,
I'm ignored, shunned,
taken no notice of,
Yet it's all so polite
and so hard to perceive...
It's funny...
you don't hear me,
but I hear you,
loud and clear.

I think these students really did a good job with this very different type of poem!

Clouds
The wind blows them to and fro
White puffs envelop the green hills
making shadows on the ground,
Looking up at the spotted sky
and seeing shapes form in the air
Cumulus clouds bunch up on the horizon
before the storm,
and then roll and tumble over as they move across the sky
By Cari F

Indifference
by Joelle Simangan
Indignantly standing in the background,
Emotionally detached, unconcerned
Your brow is furrowed, your lips tight
Passively committing the worst sin
One can, towards his fellow beings
Ignoring the calling voices about you
Casually, coolly, you walk away
You call it “insouciance”
We know it’s mere snobbery

Drinking Pleasure
The can is empty
The taste endures
The effervescence lingers
The sweet memory prevails
Dr. Pepper remains #1
By Jacob G

Roses
Budding beautiful blossoms
Fragrant sweet smells
Emotions in living color
Bouquet of floral tidings
Say, “I love you.”

Winner
The frontrunner crossed the line
The race was over
The people shouted, “Victor! Champ!”
Running up to the winner’s box they announced
He was the prize winner.

Nala
My cat had gone,
a precious life had been lost,
and I would never hold my kitten again.
Never again would my pet come when I called.
The times my kitty and I had spent I would remember forever.
My loving kitty had lived a good life,
and now my loyal friend was in a better place.
By Kali B

Charming
by Kari C.

As she approached me, I found her alluring,
fascinating in every way;
She charmed every one in the room
and captivated me .
But no more did I feel infatuated with
her mysterious beauty
When she walked past me.
Then her light became dimmer and dimmer
until she was merely a faint memory of mine.

Youth
by Kari C.

It was fun all at first
being playful and amusing,
joking around
in harmless ways
good times we have had
too bad our enjoyment didn't last
We've grown up
We can't do those things
We're not kids anymore.

Song
by Christopher S.

The song was alive
Its melody never died
It rang into the heavens
A hymn glorified the Lord on high
The sweet lullaby
The bitter cry
The anthem was never a lie

Racing
by Christopher S.

The rookie was hastening for the win
The final lap would be a dash
The fans cheered as the felt they rush of the cars
Hurry! Hurry! Hurry!
He had to make up for his lost time on pit rode
He hustled to catch the lead car
The white flag waved it would be the last lap to dart to the front
They scurried for position!!!!!!
Checkered flag in the air!!!!!
He did it!!!!!!
After 200 laps of hard racing the rookie was the winner.

Technology
by Brandon B.

The computer can be fast
The processor slow
I need a laptop that lasts
A mainframe in the know
Binary functions throughout my PC
Me at my workstation happy as can be

Party’s Over
by Willy B.

The party was over
The talking ceased
People got up to retire
It was a night
I will never forget
The night had ended
People were reluctant to leave
They left
They departed
There goes the weekend
I waved the guests good-night
As I cleaned up the house before the parents came home.

She was Kind
by Katelyn S.

I thought she was kindhearted
She was affectionate and humble
Knowing that she was being compassionate
She showed it even more with being loving
I saw her hold a child with tender fingertips
While still being merciful with the older kids
One day I asked her why she was so kind
She said, “I am not gracious or humane, it’s
Really God who is working through me
To be considerate to you and others.”

Butterfly
by Katelyn S.

It flutters down, it fans up
It flaps, flickers and it stops
It flitters and hovers, quivers too
I watch it flurry till it shakes some more
Thrilling and twittering is passes by
It vibrates and gives a waver
Then zips on through

Jabberwocky Parodies

This one was especially fun. We read Lewis Carroll's "Jabberwocky" then each student wrote a parody, choosing his or her own "manxome foe".

KittieWocky
by Katelyn S.

‘Twas sunny and cheerfully blue
Jade vines smother the gray house
Stone steps lead the way for the shoe
The bell whines as a mouse

“Beware the Kittiewock, my child
The fur that makes you blow and sneeze
Beware the itchy eyes are wild
The fuzz mass makes you wheeze!”

She took her Claritin with her
Long time since she really used it
She thought and heard a mournful purr
Which she didn’t commit

The Kittiewock came with shrill cries
Paws tapped right in and sat the purebred
With pill and water she took prize
And gulped it with rye bread

“Hast thou slain the bothersome sneeze?
Great! Sit down and see the buffet
You are free of sniffles and cough
I’m glad you stayed. Yeah!”

‘Twas sunny and cheerfully blue
Jade vines smother the gray house
Stone steps lead away for the shoe
With one hair on her blouse

Finalwocky
by Laura Mueller

’Twas December, and the fall term
Was spiraling fin’ly to an end.
Fev’rish reviews of what was learn’d
Filled each student with dread.

“Beware of Finals Week, my child!
The essay tests, the scantrons green,
Beware the lack of sleep, and shun
The temptation of more caffeine!”

She took her practice test in hand;
“Can’t be too prepared,” she meekly said.
Now reached she for another coffee
And sat a while in dread.

And, as in worried thought she sat,
The Final Test, with questions a-blaze,
Came with the stealth of a jungle-cat,
Threat’ning to thrash her good G.P.A.

A, B! C,D! That’s false, no – True!
Her Number 2 pencil was flying.
Into the bin, she handed it in,
And left class for the last time.

“And have you aced the Final Test?
Come to my arms, my poor tired one!
You said that you could, I knew you would!
Till spring term, you are done!”

’Twas December, and Finals Week
Had spiraled fin’ly to a close.
And students all, prep, jock or geek,
Bid farewell to their woes.

Rockawocky
by Willy B.

‘Twas quiet on the empty stage
When four men came crashing in
First came Plant and Jimmy Page
Followed by Young and Brian Johnson

Beware Led Zeppelin my son!
The vocals that strain the riffs that shred
Beware the Robert Plant and shun
Mighty Page’s double neck that’s red

Young took his Gibson SG in hand
Had longed to face off the foe he sought
Young began to uncramp by the Marshall Amp
And stood a while in thought

And as Young turned his amp to eleven
The Mighty Page in his dragon suit
Opened with “Stairway to Heaven”
Accompanied by Robert’s flute

The crowd the crowd was loud and proud as
Young’s Gibson played out “Back in Black”
The Mighty Page hung his head in shame
As the crowd applauded Young’s track

And hast thou defeated the Zeppelin?
Let’s celebrate at the bar
Shake my hand cause we beat the band
Brian said as they got in the car.

Preppy Girls
by Kari C.

’Twas sunny and the silky gloves
did shy and giggle in the clique;
all clumsy in their new high doves
a gathering of chicks .

beware of the preppy girls ,my son
the jaws bleached white ,the claws that scratch !
beware of the pompom chicks and shun
the flirtatious snittersnatch !

i took my cover in my hand
and shielded myself as i ran
soon out of breath i sat right down
and slept safely from the frilly band .

in a flutter of my eyelids ,i awoke
the preppy girls ,with heads up so high !
coming down with diet cokes
looking in disgust, i sigh .

one two! one two! and shoo and shoo
their flying high heels went clickety-clack !
i escaped from them
and as i walked i never did look back .

and hast thou escaped the preppy girls?
come to my arms ,my beamish boy !
O what a happy day this is!
I giggled in my joy .

’Twas a sunny and silky gloves
did shy and giggle in the clique;
all clumsy in their new high dove
and a gathering of chicks .

Boardwalk-y
By Brandon Burns

Twas grandpa as the lone patrol
Did strut and search the condo hood;
All decked with flashlight and clipboard,
And the bylaws did no good.

“Beware the B.O.D., every one!
The laws that bend, the rules that slip!
Beware receipts that never come
And contractors as they dip!”

With his CC&R’s in hand;
The association he fought--
So rested he in his lazy boy,
And options he thought.

And, to the meeting he did go,
The B.O.D., all dressed in suits,
Came to the table in-the-know,
And stomping in their boots!

Check! One-two, one-two! Listen you
The CC&R’s went page turn!
He gave the few, his point of view
He set the Board adjourn.

“Hast thou lectured the B.O.D.?
Come fix bylaws, since you know all!
O what a big day! Check one! I say!”
His check list was so tall.

Twas grandpa as the lone patrol
Did strut and search the condo hood;
All decked with flashlight and clipboard,
And the bylaws now were good.

Airwalk-y
By Brandon Burns

‘Twas grip tape, and the waxy board
Did Volcom stickers slap the deck;
All urethane wheels toward the floor,
And Rodney Mullen wrecked.

“Beware the Bam Bend Air, flip trick!
The bones that bend, the feet that stick!
Beware the Hawk who Twists, the Mick
The Melon ain’t so sick!”

He took his skateboard wax in hand;
Long time the Bert Slide Alva sought--
So rested he by the empty pool,
And surf to skate he thought.

And, in awestruck thought Tony stood,
The Bam Bend Air, with back in pain,
Came Bam Margera one who could,
And confident as he came!

50-50! Something new
Alva T. went Kick Flip too!
He showed the crowd, and went old school
Alva T. that’s who.

“And hast thou conquered new school too?
Come to my shop, I’ll sponsor you!
O victorious day! Skater! Skate!”
Only the best will do.

‘Twas grip tape, and the waxy board
Did Volcom stickers slap the deck;
All urethane wheels toward the floor,
And Rodney Mullen wrecked.

Tennis Matchy
by Benjamin Mitchell

Twas humid and the heat waves rose
In a ghastly, blistering mist
While sweat streamed freely down my nose
And a sweatband tied around my wrist.

"Beware the Derry Brooks, my son!
The swift forehand, the overhead!
Beware his spin-balls, everyone
And make sure that you're fed."

I took my Babolat in hand:
Long time I glared into his eyes
I threw the ball and hit it hard
and then the war did rise!

He slapped a spin-ball hurtling back
I returned the ball with meaning,
He rushed the net and made a smack
I caught the ball by leaning.

Forehand! Backhand! The serves were few
My Babolat went thwick and thwack!
I hit it down the alley true
AND HE COULDN'T HIT IT BACK!!!
And have you beat the Derry Brooks?
Receive the prize, my skillful boy!
And you too beat him far by looks!"
cried Rick in purest joy.

Twas humid and the heat waves rose
In a ghastly, blistering mist,
While sweat streamed freely down my nose,
And a trophy shone within my fist!
